It's easy to call yourself an eco-hotel, but it definitely isn't easy to make yourself one. We love a challenge, and we love our planet, so in 2018, we aim to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill by 80%. Recycling, composting, innovating, lobbying - our plan is to create a sustainable and responsible waste management system that can be scaled beyond Blue Apple to the rest of our island.
In the first few weeks of operation we have already diverted over 900lb (400kg) of trash from landfill.
Every day is a new learning experience and recycling on an island with no real waste disposal facilities means we have to be creative. On learning that Cartagena as a city doesn't recycle any glass, our first step has been to build our recycling sorting centre from our own glass bottles. Next step, raising funds to buy and install glass crushing equipment to turn our bottles into building grade sand, which can then be sold affordably to local people, who currently have no access to building sand.
And our guests can rest safe in the knowledge that every bottle of wine they drink really will help to build a better world.
